In this project, you will learn ways to make vocabulary pages more effective by adding information, fixing errors, and correcting differences compared to the Sample Page.

Edit a Vocabulary Page

  1. Go to your text book Table of Contents (HGD Table of Contentsor Gen Psych Table of Contents).
  2. Click on a Chapter to see a list of the vocab words from that chapter. For example, Chapter 1
    • Table of Contents.jpg
  3. Click on a vocab word to go to the vocab page. For example, Maturation.
    • ch 1 page.jpg
  4. Check to see if there is a signature at the top.
    • If there is no signature, or if it is more than 2 hours old , go to Step 6. Make sure signatures are at least 2 hours old before you click edit! This will help prevent two people editing the same page at the same time.
    • If there is a signature that is less than 2 hours old, go back to step 2.
  5. Compare the vocabulary page to the sample page. If you see things you would like to fix, go to step 3. If not, keep searching through the chapter pages (back to Step 1).
    • vocab word page at random.jpg
    • For our example, the word "Definition" needs to be a Header 1 and the Table of Contents widget has been removed.
    • There is a huge variety of things that could be wrong with a page that you could fix. See step 8 for other examples of what to look for.
    • Many pages don't have enough info on them. You can fix that, too.
  6. Sign and Save
    • This prevents problems caused by two people editing the same page at the same time. See Save Alert page if you do have a problem.
    • Delete any old signatures before signing.
  7. Click Edit again.
    • Edit button with tabs.jpg
  8. Improve the page. Please do not remove videos, pictures, analogies or mnemonics unless you have gone through a proper discussion process (see below).
    • Add to sections that are empty
    • Fix spelling or grammar issues, poorly worded text, inconsistent abbreviations, or other formatting differences
    • If the page has news links, make sure they have proper news briefs--you may have to visit the page in question in order to write a summary.
    • Check definition, chapters and page numbers for accuracy--make sure to note which text book you are using (i.e. HGD or Gen Psych).
    • Keep an eye out for analogies and mnemonics that need to be improved or removed. Look at the Sample Page for guidelines on these.
      • If you find an analogy that is more of an Example, move it to the Example section
      • If you find an analogy that needs to be improved or removed, send a wiki message (or email) to your instructor with your suggestions for improvement.
      • If you find a mnemonic that needs to be improved or removed, send a wiki message (or email) to your instructor with your suggestions for improvement.
      • If you find a video or picture that you think is inappropriate, irrelevant, or otherwise doesn't belong on the page, send a wiki message (or email) to your instructor about it.
        • You can send a wiki message if you click on a wiki signature and then click send a message - MCBarrett MCBarrett
    • If it's not already there, add a Discussion Area widget at the bottom of the page. Make sure it has the instructions for posting just like on the Sample Page.
      • Place your cursor where you want the widget to be
      • Click Widget
        • Widget button.jpg
      • Click Discussion Area
      • Save the page to be able to start a discussion.
    • Fix any other differences you find compared to the sample page.
10. Delete your signature.
  • Even if you plan on coming back to a page later in the day or the next day, still delete your signature and then re-sign (steps 3 and 4) if/when you want to resume editing on a page.
11. Save the page.
  • Save editing.jpg
12. Repeat this process until you have edited vocab pages for thirty minutes.
