Academic Paragraph Rubric


Academic Paragraphs are worth a minimum of 5 points and maximum of 20 points based on 4 categories outlined below.

Two categories will be marked down by your professor only:
10% will be deducted for late submissions
25% will be deducted if you did not follow the prompt

Substance

Basic Requirement: At least 180 words and 3 precise terms.
Very low word count AND no precise terms

Adequate word count AND precise terms used clearly and correctly.

Clarity

Basic Requirement: Readable with a logical flow of ideas.

Academic Essay Rubric


If the assignment is late: -10%

Content/Development--40%

(you will not get more than 40% taken off for this one category)
If the essay doesn't follow an approved prompt: -30%
If the word count is above 1300 words or below 900: -2% per 50 words
If the essay doesn't pertain to the textbook: -10%
If the essay doesn't use proper vocabulary: -10%
If the essay doesn't give specific examples: -10%

Organization--30%

(you will not get more than 30% taken off for this one category)
If the essay is missing an introduction: -10%
If the essay is missing a conclusion: -10%
If the thesis is unclear: -10%
If.the transitions between paragraphs are unclear: -10%
If.the transitions between sentences are unclear: -3% each

Style/Mechanics--30%

(you will not get more than 30% taken off for this one category)
If the in-text citations are missing: -10%
If the in-text citations do not match the references: -10%
If the references are not in APA/MLA format: -10%
If the references are missing: -10%
If the grammar/spelling/punctuation is poor: -2% for every instance
If the tone is inappropriate to the audience, content, and/or assignment: -10%

Term Paper Rubric
